Our KS2 mathematics curriculum is designed to maximise the development of every child's ability and academic achievement. We deliver lessons in a creative and engaging way and continually build on previous learning. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas building on from fluency to mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

At Thurcroft Junior Academy, we have high expectations of all of our pupils, we strive to ensure children achieve their full potential through high quality teaching and inclusive practise.  

Mathematics is taught daily within our academy, ensuring we cover a broad and balanced curriculum, covering all aspects of the National Curriculum: number, calculation, geometry, measure and statistics. Our lessons begin with a daily 10 arithmetic, which focuses on the foundations of mathematics: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The arithmetic starter builds and consolidates on children’s prior knowledge. This has been proven effective to build children’s confidence using a variety of methods to determine an answer.

Times tables are also practised daily with children in our academy. We believe that a sound times table knowledge is essential for children to succeed within the maths curriculum. We re-cap times tables through games, TTRS and through the use of a counting stick. Children in year 4 are now required to administer an online multiplication tables check (MTC) to Year 4 pupils. The purpose of this is to ensure that all pupils can fluently recall times table to 12x12, which is essential for future success in mathematics. 

Extra-curricular opportunities are available for children within our academy. Maths after school club enables children to build on their mathematic knowledge through puzzles, problem solving and online learning.  

Our foundations unit is a number rich environment, which provides our children with the opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems and to describe shapes, spaces and measures. Within our early years provision, we aim for children to be able to meet these targets:

• Sing number songs
• Recite numbers in order to 10
• Make comparisons using mathematical language
• Understand and use positional language
• Explore and notice errors in repeating patterns
• Name, explore and describe familiar 2D shapes
• Show finger numbers to 5
• Count out up to 5 objects and match numeral to quantity
• Approach problem solving with perseverance
• Subitise up to 3

How can you help at home? 

There are a variety of online platforms, which children can access at home, which will enable children to consolidate their maths knowledge. Their log-in details for these websites are written in their school planners. 

TTRockstars - This website enables children to build on their timestable knowledge in a fun and engaging way. There are various different modes children can play in to earn points, whilst also learning their times tables. Times tables are fundamental within our maths curriculum. At the end of each week, one class is presented with a trophy for the most coins on TTRS. 

Maths Shed – This website enables children to take part in numerous interactive and competitive games, which build on children’s fluency. By taking part in these games, children earn points for themselves as well as their class. At the end of each week, one class is presented with an award for the most points on Maths Shed.
